Aren't the popular stories usually ones that were posted pretty recently? Right now, the majority of the posts showing up in the sidebar are pretty old. Maybe Oppo is getting an influx of traffic from somewhere?

Many times, "Best of Oppo" will really warp that sidebar.

If enough people are reading it right now, there would be nothing to stop a story from 5 years ago or even longer to appear in the 'popular stories' column. That can happen because it's common for new articles to link to old ones. If an older article link in a new article gets enough hits, it can be a popular story.

Several times over the last 8 months, this story will surge to the top of the popular stories: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/favorite-sr-71…
It's currently at 90k views and has never been on the front page. It was part of a popular thread on Reddit and a pair of very popular pictures on imgur (not to mention 6k+ Facebook likes).
It's all driven based on what people are currently looking at within the analytics and updates in (near) realtime.

Often posts that get front-paged are in the popular stories because there are more page views. The interesting thing that happened today is my "Affordable Performance" post was shared from my personal blog before it was published to Oppo (I just shared it instead, which is why it was not an Oppo popular story). However, the "Buying New is for Suckers" is a linked article within that post that was published on Oppo, since folks were looking at that due to my post it became a popular story.
TL:DR Kinja is weird.
